Evangelism and Self-Care

Today at orientation we heard two different speakers. Both had some very interesting things to say. The first speaker, Jason, talked about evangelism and how to do it. He was saying how presbyterians tend to dread the "E" word. Some of the reasons he gave were because of the stereotypes. Like saying things like "Repent, the end is near!" He doesn't think that way of evangelism is necessarily the way to do it. I don't think so either. I've always felt strongly about that.

Instead he reinforced the argument that actions speak louder than words. Look at it this way, some people have very negative views of organized religion. There are those stereotypes of Christians that I am not proud of. If we keep telling these "sinners" that they are going to hell unless they repent from their sins and believe in God what do they get from that? They don't even believe it in the first place. I think their reaction will just be to laugh at something said to them like that. Whereas if they see our good deeds then maybe they will think better of us. So we can evangelize by caring for people and making them feel important like they should.

The next speaker spoke to us about caring for ourselves and not just others. This I had never thought of before. She told us many stories about her when she was in voluntary service and she wanted to be perfect and be the best server possible but she had problems because she stopped thinking of herself and her needs. Basically to make a long story short you have to take care of your needs in order to help others in a correct manner and if you don't things will get very stressful.

Something that she said that really spoke out to me was "you can do the whole counting the money you've spent on yourselves and see how much you could have helped others with that money." but she doesn't suggest that kind of guilt. That reminds me of when my family will go on vacation. My parents think they just have to feel guilty about how selfish it is for us to spend our money like this. But really, everyone needs to get away and have a vacation or the stress will just build up until it gets extremely unhealthy.

Hey! It's been a while!

Wow it's been like 3 months since I last updated. But I haven't forgot about it obviously. I'm gonna try to update it more often now since I'm going to be living and serving in Hollywood for a year.

I don't really have much to say currently. Just wanted to say I'm still here. Right now I am sitting in like what seems to be a dorm room at my orientation in Stony Point, NY about to go to bed. Anyway talk to you later!
